Viral Chocolate Craze Drives Global Pistachio Shortage

A luxury pistachio-filled chocolate bar made by Dubai-based chocolatier Fix has gone viral on TikTok — and it's having a global economic impact. The confection, called Can’t Get Knafeh of It, blends milk chocolate, shredded pastry (kataifi), and pistachio cream. After clips of the treat spread across social media, including one video viewed over 120 million times, demand skyrocketed.
As a result, pistachio kernels — mostly sourced from the US and Iran — are now in short supply. Prices have jumped from $7.65 to $10.30 per pound, and even premium chocolate makers like Lindt and Läderach are struggling to keep up. One industry executive noted: “It feels like it came out of nowhere. Suddenly you see it in every corner shop.”
Meanwhile, Iranian exports of pistachios to the UAE surged 40% in just six months.
